Engaging with recent scholarship on the relations among science, resources, and territory, this paper examines role of late-nineteenth-century mineral science in rendering Peruvian underground as a knowable actionable space. I focus mineralogical work Italian-born naturalist Antonio Raimondi, identifying it dual dynamic geo-political differentiation ontological dedifferentiation. On one hand, Raimondi constructs national territory distinct due to abundance diversity minerals contained its subsurface. other, his mineralogy was undergirded by idea that Peru's were ontologically equivalent anywhere else, thus through ‘universal’ scientific knowledge practices. Both aspects Raimondi's reflected an underlying aim: stimulating ‘rebirth’ mining. Yet, suggest influence history resource-making Peru lay not immediate utility for political-economic calculation, but rather contribution imaginary mineral-rich underexploited. In conclusion, call attention need research political economies Earth approach historically geographically situated practice, attend multiple (e.g., calculative symbolic) dimensions activities, be attentive ways which logics aims may fully intersect those capital state.
